Personal profile

Research profile

My main research lies within the broader field of applied philosophy:

- philosophy of science, research design and science politics/policies

- social theory (recognition, culture and norms, cosmopolitanism)

- research ethics

- philosophy of technology

- theories of democracy

In my research I focus on cross- or interdisciplinarity - both by investigating into meaning and forms of interdisciplinarity and by doing interdisciplinary research myself (in collaboration with disciplines like sociology, architecture, urban studies, art, medicine and communication technologies). Being a member of an international expertgroup to evaluate interdisciplinary research programs and departments (KIT, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, University Heidelberg) contributed to my knowldedge of practices of interdisciplinarity.

My theoretical backround is Critical Theory, philosophical pragmatism (both classical and neo-pragmatism) as well as Practice Theory. I maintain international networks that are connected to Critical Theory (University Frankfurt), to pragmatism (Boardmember of the European Pragmatism Assocation; Collaboration with the Department of Philosopy, University of Colorado, Denver, and with the Department of Philosophy, University Pisa). Furthermore I am collaborating with the Institute for Technology Assessment (KIT, Karlsruhe Institute for Technology).

Since 2012 I am the director of the Center for Applied Philosophy at the Department of Culture and Learning. I am also member of the Center of Mobilities and Urban Studies at the Department of Architecture & Design (AAU).

For the last 20 years I have taught on BA, MA and PhD level in the following study programmes: Applied Philosophy, Sociology, Political Science, Techno-Anthropology, Urban Studies, Mobilities Studies, Architecture.

Since 2002 I have been member of the Council of the Department of Sociology and Social Work as well as of the Department of Learning and Philosophy (now: Culture and Learning). I have been member of the Academic Council of the Faculty of the Social Sciences. Furthermore I had been program coordinator for the PhD program of the Department of Learning and Philosophy (now Culture and Learning) and I have been active in articulating the strategy "Knowledge for the World" of Aalborg University.

Since 1. February 2020 member of Aalborg Universities university council.
