Academic background

Luis Emilio Bruni holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Theory of Science from the Institute of Molecular Biology, University of Copenhagen, Denmark; a Master of Science in International and Global Relations from the Universidad Central de Venezuela; and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University, USA.

Research interests

Current research interests include, among other things, narrative cognition, extended reality, cognitive processes and affective states in relation to digital, interactive, immersive and representational technologies, including affective computing, brain-computer interfaces and cognitive technologies.

In a broader perspective his research covers relations between cognition, technology and culture with focus on mind ecology.

He is the founder and director of the "Augmented Cognition Lab" at AAU, dedicated to the study of perception, cognition, affective states, and aesthetic experience in relation to immersive media and cognitive technologies.

He leads the Media Cognition and Interactive Systems research group and coordinates the Master of Science in “Medialogy” at AAU. 

Expertise

Luis Emilio Bruni is a recognized expert in semiotics with expertise in psychophysiology, bio- and cognitive semiotics, media cognition, immersive technologies, interactive digital narratives, and cultural dynamics.  

From 2011 to 2017 was elected president of the Nordic Association for Semiotic Studies (NASS). In 2005, he was founder member of the International Society for Biosemiotic Studies (ISBS) and currently serves in its executive committee. He is in the Board of the Association for Research in Digital Interactive Narratives (ARDIN).

For several years has been guest lecturer in bioethics and sustainability at the Department of Biology of the University of Copenhagen. From 1987 to 1991 was researcher at the Communication Science and Artificial Intelligence Research Centre "Semeion" of Rome, Italy, where he started his research in semiotics, cybernetics and epistemological perspectives in culture-nature relations. From 1996 to 1999 was appointed as special adviser on biodiversity, bioethics and sustainable development to the Amazonian Parliament and was researcher at the Venezuelan Centre for Global and International Relations of the Universidad Central de Venezuela.
